Why does my tap water have a gross, sort-of-sweet smell to it?

I live in an older apartment complex and have noticed that my tap water has this unpleasant, sweet smell to it. I notice it particularly when I’ve been away…I don’t know if that’s because I’m used to it or because it’s something that builds up and smells stronger when the water isn’t run for a few days. I filter my water before I drink it with a Brita pitcher, but am still concerned about what might be in my water. Anyone have any suggestions?

have you considered getting a PUR tap filter that hooks up to the faucet?
sounds like the pipes in the building have been compromised and are letting bacteria grow. It’s time to switch to bottle water.
